A Day in the Life of a Local Blind Fitter: What Goes Into a Proper Job - (By Dave – Fitter at Windsor Blinds & Shutters)
Most people probably don’t think twice about what goes into fitting a blind or shutter. You book the appointment, we come round, the blinds go up, and that’s that. But behind every smooth, no-fuss installation is a proper job done with care, accuracy, and a good bit of elbow grease.
So, I thought I’d give you a little window (excuse the pun!) into what a typical day looks like for someone like me - a fitter working with Windsor Blinds & Shutters - as I embark on a typical day’s work fitting blinds across Windsor, Maidenhead, Ascot and Slough.
7:00 AM – Getting Prepped
My day usually starts early. First stop is the studio to load up the van. Every blind and shutter has been carefully made to measure, so everything’s packed and labelled for each customer. We double-check we’ve got the right fixtures, tools, and any special instructions.
That’s the thing about our jobs. It’s not just turning up with a drill. Every home is different. One customer might have deep sash windows in a Victorian terrace in Windsor, the next might have bay windows in a modern build in Ascot. You’ve got to be prepared for everything.
8:30 AM – First Appointment: Wooden Shutters in Windsor
My first stop today is a lovely period house just off the Long Walk in Windsor. The customer’s gone for full-height wooden shutters in the front room, which is a smart choice for privacy and that classic look.
We always begin by walking through the space with the customer again, just to confirm what’s going where. I take a lot of pride in being tidy and respectful in someone’s home. Dust sheets down, shoes off, drill noise kept to a minimum.
The job takes a couple of hours. Fixing shutters properly takes time. You’ve got to ensure everything’s level, that the frames are securely fitted into the wall (not just the plasterboard), and that the panels open and close smoothly. No rattling, no sagging, just shutters that feel solid and work beautifully.
Before I leave, I walk the customer through everything. That’s one of the most satisfying bits: seeing how pleased people are. And knowing they won’t have to ring a handyman in two weeks to fix anything, because it’s already done properly.
11:30 AM – Quick Coffee, Then a Vertical Blind Fit in Slough
After a quick stop at a local café , it’s off to Slough for a simple vertical blind install in a home office. It’s a newer property, so the walls are easy to work with - straight lines and solid fixings.
These jobs might be quicker, but you’ve still got to get the details right. Are the vanes evenly spaced? Do the blinds draw the right way? Is the cord safe and secure? That’s what we mean when we say we do things ‘properly’. It’s the little things that make all the difference.
1:30 PM – Lunch on the Road
One of the perks of working locally is knowing the best spots for a sandwich or a quiet park bench to eat it on. Today it’s a bacon roll from a deli in Eton, parked up overlooking the Thames. Not bad for a Tuesday.
2:15 PM – Back to It: Roller Blinds in a Maidenhead Kitchen
The next job’s a full set of wipe-clean roller blinds for a family kitchen in Maidenhead. The customer has little ones running about, so safety is a top priority - cord cleats fitted, everything tucked away.
It’s a friendly household with curious kids and dogs barking, but that’s part of what I love about this job. Every house tells a story. And when you install something that’s both practical and looks great, you know you’re part of making that house a home
4:30 PM – Final Job in Ascot: A Conservatory Fit
Last job of the day is a bit more complex - pleated blinds in a conservatory. Lots of angles, lots of panes, and tricky access. It’s not one to rush.
But it’s where experience counts. I’ve done enough of these now to know how to make everything neat and precise with no sagging cords or loose brackets. And when the sun comes streaming through and those blinds keep the room cool and bright, you know it was worth the effort.
6:00 PM – Packing Down and Heading Home
After a quick tidy up and check-in with Daniel back at the office, it’s time to head back. Every job gets logged, and we make sure all customers are happy before we call it a day.
Some days are longer than others, but it’s always rewarding. You get to meet people, see different homes, and help them get that perfect finish, whether it’s a cosy living room, a stylish office, or a sunlit conservatory.
At Windsor Blinds & Shutters, we pride ourselves on keeping it simple, doing it properly, and always turning up with a smile. That’s the job. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
